Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine

The Web That Has No Weaver

One of my pharmacy professors recommended this book to me while I was studying pharmacy nearly 20 years ago! I like how the author explained TCM in relation to Western medicines, such as the difference in approaches and philosophies. Although it would be better if you have some basic understanding of TCM , I feel that a beginner will also enjoy this book as the author wrote this book in a very simple language.

The Foundations of Chinese Medicine: A Comprehensive Text
The Foundations of Chinese Medicine: A Comprehensive Text

The Foundations of Chinese Medicine

This book basically is THE textbook for the first year students of many Chinese Medicine colleges in the west. It goes deep into each topic. Some texts can be quite dry. So, if without some basic TCM understandings, you may feel confused and overwhelmed. This book is not ideal for absolute beginner. The reason I put it here in this booklist is if you want to get into more serious learning, then might as well learn from a comprehensive textbook. The downside is, this book is quite expensive.

Chinese Medicine Nutrition

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen

If you want some easy recipes, this is a good book with a mix of traditional and modern dishes. Also recipes from China, Japan and Korea. These recipes would be fun to try. I found this book is well explained in a very easy to understand language. I also like how they included a small TCM section of each recipe for people who have some basics of TCM. However, the problem is, there are not many pictures of the herbs or the final dishes.

Healing With Whole Foods

This is one of those books that sat on the shelves of many TCM students and practitioners. It is a thick book with more than 700 pages. It gave both perspectives on Chinese Medicine nutrition and modern nutrition. Even if you don't like to read (I myself included!), it is a great reference for integrative nutrition. You can always flip open and read a chapter for a particular topic you are interested in. One of my students who is a scientist loves this book! I am inspired, maybe one day I read from cover to cover!

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica

This is a textbook for many TCM schools in the west. It is one of the most comprehensive Chinese herbal books. It includes all the information you need to know, and also include some western studies of that particular herb. It is a very thick book and quite expensive. It would be a good reference for people who want to embark on academic studies of TCM and want a proper reference.

Clinical Handbook of Chinese Herbs
Clinical Handbook of Chinese Herbs

Clinical Handbook of Chinese Herbs

This book is suitable for anyone who loves charts! It is one of my favourite reference, as it is very easy to look for information . However, as the title indicated, it is a clinical handbook, mainly for Chinese medicine practitioners. Information is presented in a very precise matter, assuming you already received the proper training in Chinese herbal medicine. Without the basic, it will be hard for you to use the book in a practical way. It is only recommended for practitioners or students.

The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine

The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine (Huang Di Nei Jing 黄帝内经) is an ancient Chinese medical text that has more than 2000 years of history. It is often being seen as the fundamental doctrinal source of Chinese Medicine. If you like to get know to more about the this classic, I find the translation of this book is quite good. I personally like to read classic, as that where the ancient wisdom is from! Many theories still make a lot sense in modern days!

Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis
Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis

Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis

For those who are interested to learn more about Chinese Tongue diagnosis, this is a good book as it has many colourful tongue pictures. These pictures provide good reference on many basic jargons, such as 'thick coating', 'yellow tongue coating' etc. However, for those who are beginners, please don't self-diagnose merely from the pictures of this book. Chinese medicine diagnosis is a complex decision process by qualified Chinese Medicine practitioners. Tongue is only one part of the diagnosis process!

Books recommended by
my TCM colleagues and students

These are the books recommended by my TCM colleagues and students. Since I don’t own the books, it is inappropriate for me to give any reviews. Yet, they are another selection of books you can look into and they seem to have good reviews on Amazon too. And now I wonder if I should buy some of them too!
